Movie Critique: Star Wars

Star Wars: A New Hope is a spectacular sci-fi film that well filmed. The plot of this movie shows young Luke Skywalker finding his place in the vast universe. As a small farmer on a desert planet he does not know anything outside of his home world. After a turn of events he finds himself in the presence of Obi-Wan training to become a Jedi knight. The inference of the characters he meets shows that a connection with the force is a big part of his past.  His journey is one that takes him on a series of adventures to defeat the Empire and their goal to take over the galaxy.

The ideas presented in this film are very familiar to other stories.  There is love, adventure, saving the world (or in this case the galaxy), and the development of a normal young man who turns into a hero. Yet this takes the typical style of film, a western for example, and shows them in a future that is filled with technology that is far beyond our time.

The purpose of this film seems to be one of entertainment. The story line is so familiar in relation to other films that it does not serve any other significant purpose beyond the means of an exciting look into the future. The basic characters of the film are typical of any adventure film, the hero (Luke Skywalker), the sidekick (Han Solo), the villain (Darth Vader), and the wise man (Obi-Wan).

The film keeps the viewer entertained by exciting visual effects and a dramatic/action filled plot line.
